choo choo train

I just had a sudden remembrance (or whatever the act of remembering is) that my dreams often consist of boarding a train.

In these dreams, I don't remember actually being on the train very often. The most memorable part is the part where I am buying the ticket.
Every time I dream about this the ticket machine is like this massive ass touchscreen thing that is so counterintuitive. I have like 20 billion categories of stations and I have no idea what the hell I'm doing.

The worst thing is that every time, I'm with friends, and they get through in like 15 seconds, and I'm stuck there like an idiot for like 2 minutes while they wait.

The good thing is that I never miss the train.

I don't even know what happens after I "buy the ticket".

Fuarr this repeating motif is so interesting. I hope I randomly discover more. Oh, in case you'd like to know, people I know from school are now appearing in my dreams. Before it was either family or anonymous, which I found interesting.
Now school people are appearing with regularity.

parasite

Many of you may be sick of this already but I want to share this thought experiment(?). Anyways I invite you to come and join the discussion.

Postulate: An unborn human baby is a parasite.

The only logical argument I've heard against it that I will accept is that by definition, technically, a parasite has to be of a different species.
But that's the only reason I heard.
It still is a living organism that only takes and does not give. So by everything other than name, they are still a parasite.

For the purposes of this discussion, I will ignore the technicality that a parasite must be of a different species. I have a feeling that most people's disagreement to having foetuses referred to as parasites is not related to my glossing over of the "different species" fact, but stems from something more sentimental. For that reason, I think that although it is not a parasite, thanks to a technicality, it is not an emotionally fulfilling answer to the postulate.
If this oversight troubles you, I would like to know why, and why you are really disagreeing.

Here are some rebuttals I have heard, and I provide my rebuttals to their rebuttals (as I said it to them, basically). If I have left yours out it is purely because I have forgotten. Please remind me, in that case :L

People want babies.
Consider people who broke their condoms and accidentally conceived. Is that baby a parasite?
Furthermore, is the parasite status conditional - can a tapeworm or leech sometimes be a parasite, and sometimes not?
Think about dieters who swallow immature tapeworms so that they can lose weight. Are you going to argue with me that by intentionally eating raw meat, or even swallowing the cysts in tablet form, is not a manifestation of their "want" for this parasite?

So the fetus is only a parasite if unwanted?
Good question. That depends. Is a parasite only a parasite if unwanted?
If I really liked leeches and I let them take my blood, do they stop being parasites? Did they redeem themselves or something?
If the answer is "no, because leeches and tapeworms are parasites always", then I answer the same about foetuses.

I'm pretty sure there's research that says that during pregnancy stem cells and other cells from the baby also go into the mother to reinforce her immune system. And that those cells stay in the mother even after the baby's born and help to increase her resistance against autoimmune diseases or something like that.
Barring the unreliability of this claim, I think you may have missed the forest for the trees. Sure, the foetus may arbitrarily "boost" the immune system, but clearly not to the point that mothers never catch a disease. Let's not forget the raging hormones, inability to move freely, leeching off nutrients, potential spinal damage, plus the all of these.
Similarly, with pre-scientific medicine, there was "research (look for 'life of the patient was preserved')" that says leeching could get rid of bad blood and treat diseases. Remember leeching was a thing they used from at least 17th century (I have a feeling it could be earlier but I couldn't find any sources), all the way up until mid-19th Century. Does this wishy-washy benefit uproot the leech's status as a parasite?

A tapeworm causes mechanical damage.
This was after Vaish shamelessly asked Mrs Flanagan. Unfortunately it was the end of the period and I did not have the time to get into a deep discussion with her :L
A baby can cause damage to the spine indirectly (like how the tapeworm indirectly causes malnutrition). They can also fuck up the cervix and vaginal canal real good during birth as well.
Morning sickness, having to pee every couple of minutes, and hardly being able to get out of bed towards the end of the pregnancy can be seen as sacrifices of physical health.
A baby also acts as some sort of hallucinogen, influencing the host to have cravings for random foods.
You will really REALLY want to do the cinnamon challenge, minion.
A baby can boost your emotional and spiritual health.
Yes. At the same time, if it was a broken condom baby, you will be losing hairs as fast as they can clog the shower drain.
Like if any of you female readers were impregnated right now, please tell me that it would be beneficial to your emotional and spiritual health. I dare you :L
Also, again, using the tapeworm diet - aren't they gaining emotional security by achieving their own desires? While their physical health declines (as seen above, arguably a foetus isn't much better), their emotional health (maybe spiritual health - I don't actually know wtf that is) is increasing in their eyes, right?

But a tapeworm is disgusting!
Delectable.
That, my friends, is the human placenta. It looks no better nor worse than a tapeworm. In fact, a cleaned tapeworm looks pretty fine.
As you may point out, it is unfair to use a placenta in the argument involving babies. Well to be fair a freshly born baby, with all the blood-like fluids around it, and its crying, is not much more attractive than a tapeworm.
As a human I know childbirth is actually a uniquely beautiful process and that bloody mess of noise and umbilical cord is beautiful (sentimentally), but I think we abandoned human subjectiveness and its positive bias towards offspring a LONG time ago.

A baby will eventually leave your body
You can shit out tapeworms eventually. Next.

But I heard the guy at Field of Mars say that a parasite is only a parasite if it causes harm to the point of fatality to the host organism. Not all women die of childbirth... - Susmitha
I want you to name 5 human parasites.
Then, I want you to tell me how many of those kill you while they're sucking your blood.
From a parasite's point of view, it is very disadvantageous to kill the host. It is much better to have the same host sustain a parasite for the duration of the parasite's life - that would be ideal.

does that as soon as we exit the uterus, we are no longer considered a parasite?
In the same way that when you pull a leech off your skin it is no longer considered a parasite.
Though, yes you are correct even if your question did not explicitly address the point that outside of the mother/host, it will no longer die without being attached to the host. You know, barring breast milk and their tendency to swallow whatever they can find, among all the other suicidal things babies do. But yeah, once born it's not a parasite for the sake of this discussion.

But that means you were once a parasite.
Okay.

You wife is going to dump you if you tell her it's a parasite.
My hypothetical wife dumping me does not make the baby any less of a parasite.

That's offensive.
It is only because it has negative connotations in the English language. You should overcome your subjective stigmas against these organisms. It is a scientific term and has very objective origins.

But parasites are bad for most people! How would you like a tapeworm in your body?!
I think I'd rather have a tapeworm than have a baby in my body. It's a bit worrying to have a foetus.
If you add together all the prepubescent girls, and all the males in the world, I am sure that constitutes as "most people", and hence we can conclude that a foetus will be bad for "most people".

How about when I fall pregnant, you get a tapeworm in your intestines? [Female speaker, of course]
Just because you have a parasite doesn't mean I want one.
You know you want one. All the cool kids are doing it!

You're going to fail section 2 of UMAT.
You may think that but at least I'll ace section 1.
Anyways the conclusion I made in class (I had to use humour because logic didn't have the greatest presence by the time these kind of comments were being made) is that
Section 1: Babies are parasites
Section 2: Babies are not parasites
Section 3: There will be 3 parasites and 1 baby in the next frame

there is a whole list of reasons there if that helps.
The only un-waffle one is 1, and that's like the first thing I addressed. I'ma be blunt now and say that that list is pretty crap. Can I trust you to come back with the ones that you don't think are stupid? Then we can talk. I can't be bothered pointing out the obvious :L.

excel-lent

Screw humility - I make epic spreadsheets =P

Backstory:

I was worried that my Zenbook had shitty battery life - at school I was getting battery life of like 2-3 hours on battery saver mode.
Then I realised I should've known enough about electronics than to expect stellar battery life right out of the box.
Open CCleaner to check when the default programs were installed onto this computer, the super deep system files were from 31/Mar/2011, and the programs installed just prior to commercial shipping were installed mid Oct/2011. [Hence why I received the relatively shitty Sentelic touchpad, as it started shipping with Elan sometime in November. It's not too bad, actually. Not as bad as the Internet would have it. Just the fact you can't turn it off very easily is stupid as fuck.]
So anyways this laptop sat nicely in its box for a good half-year. I ripped it out of its box one fateful day and in retrospect, 2-3 hours isn't half bad :L.
At home I had the epiphany that I should cycle this shit, so I did. Of course I felt obliged to monitor my progress, so I set up a battery log.

The Spreadsheet:

I kinda feel like uploading it, but at the same time I know spreadsheeting isn't something people value as much as, say, Photoshop skills and so I'm like meh whatevs.

But I'll have you know I used (relatively) impressive formulae like

=IF(E5="sleep", 0, H6*24*60)
=AVERAGEIF(Table1[Active Minutes], ">0",Table1[Battery Drop (%/min)])
=IFERROR(G3/(I3/60),"-")

I'll explain those three formulae above for funzies

  • The first one detects whether I specified the computer was in sleep mode for that time. If it was, the cell will display 0. If it was not in sleep mode, it will convert column H from time formatted cells to a numerical number of minutes.
  • The second one checks the column "Active Minutes" (that's what I called total number of minutes - sleep time). As long as there are more than 0 active minutes for each time bracket, I take the average of my column "Battery Drop". If there are 0 active minutes for one row, that row's data is disregarded (I did this because otherwise my average battery life calculations would be way higher than actual values)
  • The last one is because I have the same formula for each column of cells, the first one will usually have nothing to subtract, or divide by zero. So to make the cell be pretty and not read the dreaded #DIV/0! or #VALUE!, the formula will detect any errors and just substitute in a dash.

Okay in the grand scale of things it's pretty scrub spreadsheeting, and I still don't know how to use more than 80% of Excel's formulae (and probably never will - too much statistical maths that I'll never learn), but it's so satisfying to be able to plug in time and battery level, and have calculations like "Estimated hours/100%" and "Battery drop %/hour" plus a line graph(!!) just pop up magically.
And seeing as most people are impressed when I replicate formulae down a column, or even when I use formulae (?!!), I feel pretty good :P

By the way, if I complained to anyone about my keyboard - I'm used to it now! No longer dropping letters, and I quite like how the keys feel when I press down on them. I am, however, realising this text is a little too small for extended periods of reading. Movies and touchtyping it is :P

Anyways, ultimate obnoxious post over, I hope I may find something else interesting to blog about soon.

term 1 finale

Yay end of Term 1 why not celebrate with a blog post.

I had a cool conspiracy theory about the outcome of this year.
You are hereby warned that if you are religious and hence liable to offence because of my flippant attitude towards Jesus et al, you should bail. Please note that if you read it anyway, and you want to talk to me about it, I only have energy to hear how awesome you think this theory is. If you want to preach at me I'm likely to just ignore you. You have been warned. Page break just in case.

my word

Woo two amazing deals I have seen relating to Microsoft Office that I must share.

I will first off establish that both these are equivalent to Microsoft Office Professional. Microsoft Office Professional is $849 for 2 PCs, $499 for 1 PC. So have a little think of how much you would would not like to buy it full price.

At the SI Group website, all you have to do is provide your DEC (the new version of DET, apparently) email.
Previously where you were like blah.blah2@det.nsw.edu.au, your email has now sneakily changed to blah.blah2@education.nsw.gov.au
This happened seamlessly so that POP/IMAP forwarding was transferred. In fact if you'd blow the dust off your DET/DEC student portal login, and hit the site now, it's much brushed up with better resources like a timetable and stuff that I still won't use.
In any case if you just read the User Guide that they provide, you are on your way to a discounted version of Microsoft Office Professional Plus (one PC). How discounted?
IT'S FREE TROLOL.
Note that Professional Plus includes a few extra programs ON TOP of Professional. So in addition to all the ones you use (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Onenote), Professional includes Outlook, Publisher and Access. Even better, in Professional Plus, you are getting stupid programs nobody ever uses like Infopath, Sharepoint Workspace (formerly Groove) and Lync. No idea what the last 3 do at all.
Note that I haven't actually tried this as I am waiting till my new laptop arrives to install this, but tell me if it works!
I do believe that only applies for high school students as uni's are not DEC. Though if you go to TAFE you're still covered by that above program LOL.
Do what you want cos a pirate is free, but this shit is better!
Found this bright and early in the morning on Ozbargain. I was looking for that JB HiFi Logitech deal then BAM free Office on the sidebar. WHY NOT.
Also linked is one license to Windows 7 Professional and one license to Windows 7 Ultimate. Not that I'd ever buy Professional/Ultimate seeing as it has stuff I won't need... but it's pretty cool to get for free =P

For those of you with med/lawyer/not-TAFE aspirations in mind, fear not the sacrifice of having access to less programs, or paying that hectic $850.
For that, we have the Microsoft Office University. I found that this is installable on on PC and one laptop (I emailed customer support to double check their shady wording). So this means one for home and one for lectures YAY.
Unfortunately you will not get your junk programs of Infopath, Sharepoint Workspace, or Lync.
For peace of mind, yes you will still get Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, Powerpoint, Onenote, and Publisher.
This comes at a dandy price of $99. Considering it is essentially two installs, this is almost as holy fuck-worthy as the free one.
I'm guessing somewhere down the line (quite soon) when Office 15 comes out (not sure if that's because it's going to be released in 2015... they seem to have a trend of every 2-3 years: 95, 07, 2000, 03, 07, 10)
Assuming this University package stays till then, that would be bloody awesome.
I found this as an ad in the confirmation email of my laptop purchase - I appreciated it greatly =P

So in short, one is free Microsoft Office. Properly licensed and registered too! Another is cheaper version of Professional.

By the end of this week, I'd have saved $320 from buying laptop, and $499+ from getting the free office ($499+ as Professional Plus isn't actually commercially available - must be Volume Licensed).
That's enough to buy a decent acoustic guitar. Not that I'm going to, I cbf doing the comparing and shit atm :L
Also it's not really fair to say I saved $499 seeing as I wouldn't've ever dreamed of buying Professional anyway. Screw that shit Home and Student would've been fine.

Subjective

You know when you listen to people talk about other subjects and you're just like "da fuck would you want to learn that for".
I never really understood why people said "thank god I don't do phys/bio/chem." Then I listened to people talk about Eco then I was like... "Okay I know dat feel bro"

Like wildfire

Aww no a little research told me that Justin Bieber (probably) never said he'd be this generations Kurt Cobain.
And his "supergroup" was just some stupid prank he pulled. Although in the video he said "but better [than the Beatles]" too many times to make sense.
Damn you, internet, for spreading rumours so fast. I wonder how much other shit I take as fact.
My opinion goes back to
Voice: Good
Voice suited to music: So-so
Choice of music: No
Personality: To be informed

Low fat junk food

What the fuck do you think you're doing. Just because it's "less unhealthy" doesn't make it "healthy".
Like low fat ice cream is just lose-lose. You eat it, it doesn't taste that good, you're still getting fatter, and still gateway drug into full cream ice cream because that's the real shit.
Or like the wholegrain Pringles. This shit is still fried but at least your shit will come out a little easier cos this stuff is WHOLEGRAIN. The texture of the wholegrain one is dodge, but it's sweeter than the potato one. Not sure if sweet is the taste I'm looking for in chips.

UMAT - Medentry douchebaggery

Anyone who's done Medentry drills will know - when the patterns move and it's like -
(In any section C) JOKES DID YOU THINK THIS NUMBER WAS USEFUL. I JUST PUT IT THERE SO AS DECORATION.
(In Pick the Middle) COULDN'T YOU TELL THAT THIS BLACK BOX SCANS ACROSS THE GRID IN FIBONACCI NUMBERS? LIKE, THE IMAGES ARE ONLY OUT OF ORDER, WHY WOULDN'T YOU BE ABLE TO WORK OUT FIBONACCI FROM THAT.

I hate how you can't tell if one shape is covering another shape, or whether that shape completely disappeared from the question.

the hunger theory

Today we ran the cross country.

Alternated between running and strolling wooo so get off the track in reasonably time, don't get too tired, don't get into zone. TRIPLE BLOW.

Screw the cross country I want to talk about hunger. So a bunch of us were sitting in a circle chilling out during uber long lunch.

Jeff: I'm not hungry at all after running that
Max: It's the caveman theory/reaction (I can't remember which word he used)
All: ???
Max: When you have been running for ages and you don't feel hungry. Because if cavemen had been running around for ages it probably means there's no food.
Somebody Tree: But what if cavemen were running to hunt stuff? [Add extra stuff: Like humans were weak shits and instead of actually fighting animals they just ran at them until they got tired.]
*brief pause*
Jeff: It's so you can carry the food home and not eat it on the way, to impress the babes and then bone them
*general lols and agreement*
Tree: So in order to feel hungry, you have to walk equal distance to how far you ran, carrying something heavy on your back.
*a greater amount of lols*

So yes we traced the biological roots of why we don't feel hungry after excessive exercise.

And so begins the return of the papers woo.
Goodluck don't stress yourself too hard. Unless you want to, then whatever go ahead.

i've been dazed and confused

Woooo English is over which means half our exams are over!

Making multitudes of idiotic mistakes in 4u that screw up the latter parts of the question. I hope adrenaline does its thing on Wednesday and Friday

Today I used my whole morning playing guitar. I hope my neighbours like Led Zeppelin. I put on Mothership and tried to play along. Which worked for most of them. I couldn't be bothered with the non-main arpeggio bits in "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" because there are random 4 bars of chords that never appear again so I never got to work them out.

I like the guitar part of Ramble On a lot =P

I got up to "When the Levee Breaks" and realised that perhaps I should do some work.

Yayay my hands are cold. Goodluck for whatever exams you may have!

I love it when something runs out of batteries, and you just take the batteries out and swap them over. And it starts working again. MWAHAHA
On a similar note - I love how the iPhone doesn't waste all its battery telling you that it has no more battery.

dafuq did I just read

Homeschooling-Paradise Math Problems

Because I cbf with a proper post
I saw this link after some College Humour videos (College Humour isn't what it used to be ;_;). I found it quite funny because some of them are things I do. Some of them I suspect aren't what most girls think (despite the title of her video) I feel like making my own comments =P

Yeah you don't have to watch it, I've summarised her main points and added my 2 cents

1) Why do guys watch the same movies over and over eg Fast and Furious, Tokyo Drift, etc.
Don't girls rewatch the same movies over and over again as well? Just different movies to what we watch, probably, but still! There's nothing wrong with re-watching a movie! Especially if it's an action movie and it's hardly about the plot and you're just watching for the cool effects. Like the battles in LOTR!
She says "I'd literally watch any fucking crap ass television show over a movie I've seen a hundred fucking times."
Really? Does anyone else agree with this statement? TV shows can get PRETTY CRAP if you search hard enough. I'm pretty sure my tolerance for even established soap operas is pretty bloody low. Compared to say, my tolerance for LOTR again.

2) Let's watch this movie! It started an hour ago! (Why would you watch a movie from middle to end?!)
If it's a movie I've watched before, I'd happily skip the first bit of, say, again, LOTR, to watch some hectic battles. I already know who the characters are so screw the establishment!
But if it's a previously unwatched movie then yeah I'd rather watch from the beginning. Mainly cos I have nfi what's going on otherwise.

3) Why do you want me to smell your farts?
I've never done this, can't relate.

4) Why, after a shower, do you leave your towel on for ever?
I DO THIS. Partially because it's too much effort to dry off completely in the shower. So wearing the towel covers what needs to be covered while evaporation does its thing.
Plus, evaporative cooling feels pretty hectic.
I suppose in the end it's a "because I can" thing.
And I don't get cold so why the hell get dressed? It's something society oppressively pushed onto us.

5) Why turn on the bathroom fan after a shit and leave it on till the end of time?
I turn on the fan before I take a crap. I turn it off afterwards if it wasn't noxious. If it is I leave it on and forget. So it has some truth. But it's for the greater good of humanity.

6) Why leave so much hair everywhere after shaving?
I am an Asian kid therefore do not have enough hair to relate. In my experience though, it's not that hard to wash your razor in the bloody sink.

7) Why ask her how long you should microwave stuff for?
Because I have no fucking idea. And guess who will scream at me if I boil/pop something in the microwave :L. It's a safety precaution for all parties.
Though it's pretty stupid to ask if I have microwaved it before, or there are directions on the packet.

8) Why turn on air conditioner when it's equally as cold outside?
Stereotypically girls are more sensitive to air conditioners than guys for reasons unknown. But personally I don't need airconditioning - tolerate whatever temperature, warm or cold, like our ancestors did. Fun fact - I didn't have air conditioning in my home until end of 2011. And this is the only summer that never got hot enough for air conditioning WOO

9) Why do guys get sweaty sleeping?
I don't think I get sweaty, though, of course, I'm asleep and I can't tell.

10) Why do you put peanut butter in the fridge?
That's like putting Nutella in the fridge but less punishable by death.

just you know why...

Today, after school Sun took out his box of sushi that every (except me =P) swarmed.

I'd just like to say Sandra's compulsive squishing of Sun's food ("I wasn't trying to POP the tomato - just bruise it very badly!") is quite humourous.

And then she started squeezing his cheese. Which I noticed was Laughing Cow. ie not Panda.

"Not Panda cheese, Sun. You dead, man"

Unfortunately he was the only one there that didn't laugh because he hasn't seen it before. And if you haven't seen it before it's embedded here.

I also like that epic state of sleeping where you're not really asleep but you are. This is most easily measured when listening to music. Like, I am in shallow enough sleep to hear the lyrics and remember hearing every song. But when I "wake up" I only have a hazy recollection that I DID listen to the music, but soon forget... I can't explain it - it's rather like trying to remember a dream.
Wait upon further inspection... I just checked the album of American Idiot - was wide awake for American Idiot, fell asleep during Jesus of Surburbia, zero recollection of Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We The Waiting, St Jimmy, Give Me Novocaine, She's a Rebel, Extraordinary Girl, Letterbomb, was in that beautiful state of half awake/half asleep for Wake Me Up When September Ends (kinda apt that I regained consciousness then), same state for Homecoming, was pretty much awake for Whatsername.

Wow so I filled out a full nap-cycle with American Idiot. That's such a good way to fall asleep.

Also lastly I want to say, that a couple of bands are so great that it is impossible to judge people who listen to them. Like I can laugh at peeps if they listen to like Pitbull. Or, to give an example of an artist/group that people ACTUALLY listen to, maybe something I'm more famous for scorning - Glee.
And perhaps they do sound great to half the population but it's difficult to claim I'm unjustified in making fun of it - mainly cos Anonymous is generally against Glee.

But I found some bands that you just have to respect, even if you don't listen to their music. You can't go "HAHAHA YOU LISTEN TO THEM?!?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOUR EARS?"

Of course there can be more than just these few bands, but I can't think of any more impossibly-greats off the top of my head.

Actually ignore if I said "bands" up there, I included individuals too

These artists are:
-The Beatles
-Jimi Hendrix Experience (mainly just Jimi Hendrix)
-Led Zeppelin
-Elvis Presley
-The Rolling Stones

Quite possibly, it actually backfires and makes your own music taste look worse to laugh at any of them. Legends deserve their respect.
Because while you yourself may think any of those bands are retarded (God be with you), 99% chance your idol in some shape or form was influenced by one of those guys.

TELL ME IF YOU THINK OF MORE SUPER INFLUENCE BANDS THAT I MAY HAVE MISSED.

I did consider Queen, but they don't give off the same holy vibe as those 4 I listed above.
Pink Floyd, Eagles, AC/DC, I all thought about, but I decided against them. What do you think?
Of a more contemporary band, I think old Guns N Roses might've been pretty insanely influential - I wonder how much November Rain, Sweet Child o' Mine and Welcome to the Jungle did for new rock bands out there... Nirvana too. Although not terribly virtuosic, had a simple brutality that just worked.

Anyhoos I totally went off on a tangent but whatever. You still read it all (Y)

smells like teen spirit

Today we had a chemistry prac.

We were reflux-ing ethanoic acid and 1-pentanol to make amyl acetate or pentyl acetate I can't remember what we're meant to call it.
This ester is to have a fragrant banana smell, in contrast with the sharp stinging smell of ethanoic acid, and the nail-polish-smell of 1-pentanol.

So we were being told a story of how the previous class conducted the experiment without any major incidents. One boy did manage to spill ester on his hand and he smelt like banana.

I finished the story to our table by adding "Then he ate himself and he died. The End."

Anyways so we were refluxing and in the space between lighting the Bunsen burner and actually getting results, we were being simultaneously being taught and told anecdotes.
He was informing us of how if we hit a couple of notes out of the many notes smelt in a banana, and we can still recognise it as a banana. And how it's like an mp3 ripped off a CD, which holds only 5% as much data as the CD file. Which sounds like so much lower quality than "compressed 20 times" =O. The power of expression to warp our interpretations of the same data =O. Mr Bialy is such an audiophile.

Then he was showing us a word doc with a bajillion esters and what they smell like. Then we found out that amyl acetate/pentyl acetate is also the bee alarm pheromone. So presumably if you torture many bees you will extract a fragrant fruity smell. Appears to be legitimate, good gentleman/lady.

"So, if this classroom was right near the JR plots, and we had our windows open, the bees would be going ballistic!"

And I chimed "One might say, they would be going bananas."
(inb4 Tranny)

I think that's the first class-laugh-out-loud quip that I've made since like year 10 =O. I slightly ruined it by smiling too much but whatever =P

As an addendum:
Do you know what's bloody cool? As a catalyst, we used 18mol/L sulfuric acid. Not 1.8. FREAKING EIGHTEEN. Theoretically that's a pH of -1.6. It was so exciting to be so close to something 180 times more concentrated than what we usually use. Think of all the things we could destroy - the possibilities are endless!

dynamo

http://dynamo.dictionary.com/word-dynamo-challenge

This is a vocab testing game. The crossword is bloody impossible cos the hints are vague - the game I suggest is the "match" gameplay where it actually tests your vocabulary.

I played a couple of the quizzes and found out that Dictionary.com estimates my vocab to be 30,000+ words at the moment. I'll give a more accurate number later if I finish all the quizzes.

But there are so many different ways of considering "types of vocabulary", each as interesting as the other. I've organised in roughly from largest volume to smallest volume.

Recognise as an English word [I can't think of an example of a really weirdly spelt word that I have no idea how to spell, but I could've said "mmhmm heard that as a word before"]
Recognise and can spell [e.g. obsequious is a word I knew and recognised as English, but I really had no idea what it meant]
Recognise and know the meaning if prompted [This is what the Word Dynamo game assesses, >30,000]
Can spell, know the meaning if prompted [Probably slightly less, at 30,000 flat]
Recognise and know the meaning without prompts [Dramatically less - low 20,000's]
Can spell and know the meaning without prompts [20,000 flat]
Use the word in writing such as in essays [Probably something like 15,000]
Use the word in every day speech [Can't be much more than 10,000]

I don't even read over these posts anymore. Year 12 is quite draining =O

i found it hard, it's hard to find

A compilation of small things that are too short to blog about and Twitter is stupid it's just a mass convo site for us.

Oh well, whatever, never mind

I find it amusing when someone who never talks to me comes up to me asking a couple of questions (work related). Then they find out that I haven't fulfilled some sort of criterion of theirs and they say "nvm" and I think "wasn't going to anyway."

Clickity

It's bloody hard to click triplets with one hand and click quavers with another. I have not ever done it properly.

Like a sir

There are a couple words that I swear less than half the grade knows how to pronounce correctly (I was talking to Max about one of these words I forget):
Cambridge - CAME-bridge (not CAM-bridge)
Pronunciation - pro-NUN-see-ay-shun (exactly how it's spelt, basically). It's not pronounce-iation. So ironic that most can't pronounce the word that means to pronounce.
Penalise - PEE-na-lize (though maybe Americanised to PEN-uh-lize)
Cavalry - exactly how it's spelt. None of that "CAL-vary" crap please. Apparently Calvary is some place outside Jerusalem. Which I am sure you are not talking about. You are obviously talking about the Riders of Rohan =P
I would put "evolution" here but the alternate pronunciation is too mainstream and has been accepted by the dictionaries.

Pluralising

I really like the words that have the -um ending to pluralise into -a. Like datum-data, stratum-strata, medium-media. You feel like a boss for knowing that something as stupid as um->a is a form of plural.

Setting e.g.

I don't get people (in relative power) who watch over others and get them to ... stay quiet (for argument's sake). Or maybe put away their phones. Then after that they go chat with their chums. Or they pull out a phone and SMS a friend. While the peons can't talk back, and can't talk/use a phone anyway, there's gonna be a great lot of discontent and low morale and general loss of respect. It's so stupid to not set the example.

Yay finished. Hope you enjoy.

warning, live without warning

This is for the people who go "omg you've stopped blogging". You impatient wanks have now been silenced for another week or so =P

There's three warnings I see that I should care about that I always go "I really don't give a fuck".

1) Batteries

"Do not dispose of in trash"
Now that chemistry has taught me a-plenty, the middles of batteries are acidic, and as the chemical reaction goes to create a current, the outer shell is actually getting eaten away. But they clearly time it so that the outer shell remains intact when your battery runs out of juice. Unless you leave it in the appliance for too long and it leaks and you get shouted at by your parents.
While I understand the environmental dangers of chemical leaching and all that crap - how else do you get rid of batteries?!

2) Cotton buds/Q-tips

"Do not insert into inner ear"
I'm not afraid to admit the only time I ever use cotton buds is to stick it into my inner ear. It's like masturbation minus the stigma.
Plus it cleans out all the wax. So it's like killing two birds with one stone.
There really are not that many applications for a cotton bud. Like it's okay for cleaning small things like lenses, or putting on antiseptic or something, but that's like using a dildo as a door stopper. It's clearly a device for pleasure.

3) Most medication

"May cause drowsiness"
I say "okay" and do whatever I was going to do anyway. Because I don't care.

Since it's been a week I'll attach an extra part. My own warning:
Today I was having fun stomping the brakes in the car when the engine's off - You should try it some time!
Anyways I discovered that although the engine is completely off, the brake lights light up if you depress the brake pedal.

As a future warning to anyone who wants to have sex in the driver's seat when they grow up - rhythmic flashing of your brake lights can only mean one thing. You are not testing the suspension of your car.

@Shelley + Lena + whoever else was on that table and was interested when Annie was talking about the crazy wife who chopped off the dude's penis and I was telling you how the audience+hosts found genital mutilation funny (only if it's on a guy, presumably):

knife in right hand, fork in left hand

I have three types of eating behaviours that are inexplicable to me, and maybe someone could clarify so my tolerance of such behaviours could be raised. I thank those enlightened minds in advance.

1. People who chomp their crunchy shit like they're fucking dinosaurs. rawr.

Like I know you can't avoid making a loud noise when eating crisps when they're already in your mouth. I forgive that. You cannot avoid that unless you suck on it, which defeats the whole purpose of the name "crisps". As well as "who the fuck likes soggy chips".
What I find irksome is when you're eating something large(r than your mouth), like prawn crackers or certain Doritos. Now, usually when it's too big, you put your lips on it to absorb the shock, and make an incision with your teeth (obviously and hopefully, your teeth are within your lips), so as to minimise spillage. Like a sir.
What I find astounding are those people that don't stop at ONLY separating the food at the point roughly equalling a mouthful, but to smash their teeth against the crunchy food as if to motherfucking shatter the whole biscuit/chip/cracker/I don't give a fuck as long as its crunchy. And hopefully somewhere along in the process, some fragments might end up in their mouth (the primary concern was getting those dB's up). And hey, it works, because your jaw is kind of capable of producing the most force out of any body part. It is not impressive at all if your teeth (we have established your cookie destroying jaws were actually designed to bite stuff) are capable of shattering abovementioned foods, because it takes no skill at all. If it were logically possible, it takes negative skill. When babies grow up, they stop wasting food. I would be impressed, say, if you were 100 and you wanted to show off that somehow your teeth were still intact and capable of this. Fine. But we are not yet so old.
Plus it drops a shitload of crumbs. If this is at camps, this makes our planned gay orgy midnight walkabouts a lot more disgusting. We're barefoot. If its like at school or some shit, it's just uncomfortable watching people drop shattered food remains everywhere. On white shirts. It's unsightly.

2. People who smack their lips while eating as if someone wanted an aural aid to count how many times they chew.

I can't describe the noise. You know when we tut at someone, and we kinda click the tongue against the roof of the mouth? Yeah, that noise. When you're eating, that is unnecessary. I think it's to demonstrate you're eating nice food. There's more effective ways of showing that off, like maybe people could passively pick up the smell of the delicious aromas. Maybe it looks delicious because you have some nicely marinated chicken and it's all glisteny and awesome looking. Or maybe you can shove it up your rectum and eat it afterwards to prove how even that does not tarnish its edibility - so powerful is the nice taste. Okay don't do the last one you'll probably get arrested for indecent exposure. I won't stop you from doing it at home, if that floats your boat.
It can't be the fact that you actually have food, because TI not A, and we are lucky enough to have access to food whenever we feel like. And if I can see you we're probably at recess or lunch, where everyone else has food anyway. Or maybe you're in class and you enjoy detentions or listening to threats of having to clean tables with your tongue. (I wonder if actually making someone do that is as illegal as we hope it is...)
If anything it shows off the fact you can substitute the primary source of aural annoyances (talking like an idiot) with your secondary sound-based weapon (chewing like a fish) because you can't even give us a break when you're stuffing your face.
So whatever point you're trying to make - we don't care.
A simple solution is to chew with your mouth closed - unless you practise it's really hard to make that clicking noise. Trust me I tried just then. You can trust yourself too because chances are you tried it just then too.

3. People who have the intrinsic need to name foodstuff in hopes of being Carl Linnaeus v2 - Food Taxonomist

All hail the annoying cries: It's a baklava! It's a baklava! It's a tiramisu! It's a tiramisu! It's a creme brulee! It's a creme brulee!
There is only one reason that I can think of why a roomful of people wouldn't mind you naming stuff. That reason is: when they asked.
Like if we were at a camp, and then I was some distance behind a friend, and wondering what version of gruel we were being served, I would ask. And they would project their voice rearward, heralding (hope that is a word) the good news of "some chicken looking stuff with corn and papier mache. Dessert is some cake shit." They would not shout out "chicken breast schnitzel with a side of golden fried potato wedges, assorted vegetables, papier mache, and don't forget the delightful dessert of tiramisu!"
Because nobody gives a fuck if you can name food when it's at a volume slightly above conversation level. If your private conversation rolls that way, sure, go ahead. But for the rest of the room - did not ask, did not care. I'd give a fuck if you could name something interesting like species of unicorns. Yeah, why don't you name us some unicorn species. And only unicorn species. Pegasus is kinda pushing it.
Like they'd serve us something with a cool name at a fucking camp anyway. Except papier mache. That just rrrrolls off the tongue.
I kid, they wouldn't serve us papier mache.
Why put in glue when you can just as easily not? So it's just paper and water.

Just so you know, these are not necessarily observed from people at school. I could've seen these behaviours at Cadets, (family) social gatherings, or even at restaurants, and then attached it to a school environment so my target audience (you!) could relate =P
If you think you are the target of this, go through this model
1) It's probably not you. No offence is directed at anyone.
2) Stop insisting it's you, I maintain it's not.
3) For the last time it's very unlikely that it is you.
4) Okay it actually is you. Go hang yourself with your own intestines.

looney tunes

This is a very funny video of Korean soldiers upon a surprise visit by Girls Generation. I found this on 9gag trending btw =)

Now that you have cbf'd clicking above video, lets talk about something interesting about the music industry.

Sampling. The greater the artist you sample, the more people are going to hate you if you fuck it up. I have listed 5 incidences of sampling from 1 being awesome, 2 being pretty epic, 3 being okay, 4 being hardly acceptable, 5 being pure asshole-ry. I don't care if it doesn't go down linear, it can be a logarithmic scale =P

1) Eminem samples Dido's "Thank You" in "Stan"
Both amazing songs. I like that it was only her vocals sampled (simple but elegant creds), with a new beat + backing, and nicely credited in the title too. And the great thing is that what makes the song isn't the hook, it's the buildup and the ending. If you haven't heard Stan before you'd need to open the lyrics up beside it cos in the drunk verse Vevo makes it sounds like "See Slim? Shut up ___ I'm trying to talk, _____ ___ _-______-_, but i __ ____ i just __ ___-" etc.

2) Daft Punk samples Edwin Birdsong's "Cola Bottle Baby" in "Harder Better Faster Stronger"
I listened to Cola Bottle Baby and was like "BUT THIS IS THE ESSENCE OF HBFS!" It's quite interesting hearing the original source of this funky ass riff. Now obviously a good deal of Daft Punk songs are sampled seeing as they are DJ's and not singers/guitarists. I included this to be fair to Kanye down there. Others include Robot Rock -> Release the Beast (Breakwater); Digital Love -> I Love You More (George Duke); Crescendolls -> Can You Imagine (Anthony and the Imperials). I just found those out by Googling I didn't actually know of those other songs :L

3) Kanye West samples Daft Punk's "Harder Better Faster Stronger" in "Stronger"
There's a heated argument between Daft and Kanye fans in the comments and it's hilarious. 3&4 was a tossup between Stronger and (SPOILERS FOR NEXT SONG ->) Me Love. While Stronger sounds better, it is clear that the HBFS hook is what makes the whole song. Me Love, while it sounds slightly lamer, only samples the vocal melody of D'yer Mak'er, and while it may not have gotten famous without the sample, it wouldn't sound like complete ass. Then I watched the 2008 Grammy where Daft Punk supported Kanye West. I didn't see a similar for Led Zep/Sean Kingston. So Stronger wins.

4) Sean Kingston samples Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Mak'er" in "Me Love"
Led Zeppelin is like fucking legend. Even if you don't like their music, you still respect it. Because it's motherfucking Led Zeppelin and it's holy.
Okay, I'll be honest, Me Love's not BAD. But it sure as hell ain't good. And when you sample Led Zeppelin, you're bound to piss off a lot of people. Hell, the comments now are still hate from Led Zeppelin fans.
For reasons stated above, this loses to "Stronger".
Also, Daft Punk is awesome, but Led Zeppelin is legendary. So that tipped the scales too.

5) Vanilla Ice samples "Under Pressure" in "Ice Ice Baby"
It's Queen. Like, Under Pressure, by Queen. Then you put "Ice Ice Baby" onto it. I have no words.
Surprisingly there are no hate comments from Queen fans right now, though there is one smug comment about how Vanilla Ice was sued for stealing the riff (a story which I doubt greatly, as ownership of creative material in the music industry is very hazy beyond DRM).
Next, rap is shit if all you do is say "I'M AT A FUCKING PARTY" or you whine about how you can't get laid. Unfortunately that is also about 80% of all rap written. Ice Ice Baby falls into that 80%.
Cue hate from Glee fans (Gleeks, right?) who will buy anything that comes out of that show. And wtf I was listening to this and you can clearly hear the autotune in the spoken part at the end. They are not even trying.

BEFORE I LEAVE - I have a special band.
This one is like -3. Does everyone remember the Rogue Traders? And their 3 biggest hits - Voodoo Child, Watching You, In Love Again? Check out the song "Pump It Up" - Elvis Costello, "My Sharona" - The Knack, and the bridge of "Head Over Heels" - Tears for Fears. The only one that resembles some sort of non-heavy reliance on tried and tested riffs is Voodoo Child, which only uses one of the riffs over and over. But the rest of them shameless lift key ideas from other songs.

belonging creative

Here is a story that I wrote randomly through SMS. We were on the topic of how annoying writing a creative is, and how much cooler it would be if we could just write a children's story.
So here is what I came up with, on a whim:

"Ouch!" cried the matchstick. "Ouch, ouch, ouch!"
His head bumped against the footpath, and suddenly - WHOOSH! - he was on fire.
What should matchstick do?
He saw a pile of gunpowder - no, that won't do!
He saw a pool of petrol - no, that won't do!
He saw a puddle on the ground - yes, that would do!
He stuck his head into the puddle and sighed. Tssssss - He was not on fire anymore!

But he changed from GINGER to NIGGER (ANAGRAM'D!)

Then my final comment - I am on freaking fire.

Analysis:
The initial cry of "Ouch" establishes a possible conflict. Indeed, he is then soon faced with the choice of how to put out the fire that is his head.
His incongruity in his environment is highlighted through the objects that are present - a matchstick does not belong where there is lots of gunpowder or petrol lying around.
The juxtaposition of racial identities in GINGER to NIGGER highlights how the colour of his head affects his sense of identity. Initially he considered himself a redhead, but after ignition, he considers himself a blackhead(?). This idea of ginger being an anagram of nigger was inspired by Tim Minchin :L

love

You'd think a flash game with spinning squares would be rather lame.

But I found this game on Kongregate while earning the Badge of the Day - this game is really clever, and the symbolism is pretty awesome. You have to watch the tutorial to get the full effect of the metaphor, but I enjoyed its wit thoroughly.

Here is the link to the game, Love.

what is love? baby don't hurt me

Whatever the fuck was going on in As You Like It, it was not love. It's hardly even infatuation.

I bet you anything that if I even remotely liked a girl, if she dressed up in drag and we talk while she is in her "disguise", I will freaking recognise her.

Like honestly, it's a freaking "man" with a non-broken voice, with feminine face bones, with presumably breasts... Maybe she wears so much makeup in the court that as soon as she takes it if she's unrecognisable. Youtube makeup gurus are the epitome of this :L

But it's true. She's just horny. She only wants a "man in [her] belly" teehee. Sorry I just had to use the euphemism. Shakespeare is a freaking genius xP

In other news the LifeProof case arrived today but I don't have a phone yet woot woot. My plan is to receive the phone and case it up asap so that it does not get exposed to the harsh elements of the real world.
